Every educational system sets its own emphases. We help create bridges that connect where you are coming from to where you are now. We assist you in getting your footing here in Switzerland. We help you to move past whatever is holding you back when it comes to learning, by reorganizing the mess of numbers and letters. Learning should be fun, not just now but for our entire lives. We support children who have difficulty with math, reading and/or writing. Furthermore we offer learning counseling for teenagers. Our experience shows that children and teenagers can win back confidence in their own abilities to learn and think if they feel as though their problems are understood. They will discover new ways to approach the material and last but not least, they learn to practice individual learning strategies with courage.

PROFILE

Corinne Galbier

Profile

As a former kindergarten teacher, psychologist and remedial teacher, I have always been interested in the individual steps of the learning process. With the help of specific tests, I can analyse a child’s learning potential from various perspectives, which is then the basis for a plan according to the their special needs. This plan assists the child in their everyday learning and works towards helping them achieve their personal goals.

What we do

We are the guidance centre for children and teenagers with dyscalculia and dyslexia.
We also offer learning guidance and learning training for teenagers.

DYSCALCULIA

Dyscalculia

What is Dyscalculia?

With dyscalculia the ability to follow a regular math lesson is almost impossible. This could be due to either an improperly built foundation in mathematics or the complete lack of one. Those affected cannot follow the lessons anymore, which leads to frustration and a loss of interest. Dyscalculia is one of the main focuses of our work. We assist children and teenagers in moving past their difficulties with mathematics, towards comprehension and success. We do this in a way that is tailored to each individual student.

Teaching does a lot. But encouragement does everything.

Johann Wolfgang von Goethe

Is your child suffering from Dyscalculia?

  • Simple math problems, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are problematic
  • Finger counting and very slow calculations
  • Transposing digits, the child mixes up two digits within one number
  • Confusing mathematical symbols, such as the plus and minus signs
  • Problems remembering intermediate results
  • Overlooking contradictory results
  • No sense of distance, time, weight, etc.
  • Problems with the decade system
  • Memorizing content without understanding, forgetting it again very quickly

Current Position

At the beginning of a consultation we access the child’s learning potential and clarify the current learning level. It is important to pay close attention, as especially clever children can conceal their dyscalculia. This can be done in some cases by finger counting for easy calculations such as nine minus seven.

What happens during professional learning counseling?

Similar to when building a house, we focus on the foundation. For example, a basic competence in mathematics is built up and from there numeracy is improved. We recognize that intense practicing and tutoring alone do not lead to success. So long as the child is lacking the basic knowledge and motivation, the outcome will be reluctance, refusal and frustration. Besides focusing on the foundation, the learning counseling also has the goal to build up the child’s self-confidence and to help them work through their fears.

PROFESSIONAL LEARNING GUIDANCE

Professional Learning Guidance

Advantages

In addition to acquiring new learning strategies for successful learning, another important part of the learning counseling is about building a good relationship between the mentor and the child. This relationship is built on understanding, appreciation, interest, trust and clear expectations.

Furthermore, children and teenagers with ADD (Attention Deficit Disorder) or ADHD (Attention Deficit Hyperactive Disorder) can be helped through this approach, as they learn to compensate for their deficits, step by step. It is not a miracle cure but small changes in the everyday lives of children with ADD/ ADHD that lead them to successfully restructure their learning habits. These children have a hard time controlling themselves and therefore they have difficulty focusing their attention. They are less capable of resisting distraction by external factors and have problems concentrating on the task at hand. They are always on the go, approaching tasks without a plan (hyperactive ADHD) or losing themselves to daydreams (hyperactive ADD). When receiving instruction, they react impulsively or just do not get it. They put off beginning an assignment indefinitely and often their procedure when it comes to completing an assignment is haphazard, hasty and rash.

With us, children learn step by step how to retain and control their attention. Research has shown that good self-control constitutes 75% of success in school, while intelligence only accounts for 25%. That is exactly where we begin our counseling process, as good self-control has a positive effect on all learners.

LEARNING GUIDANCE FOR TEENAGERS

Learning Guidance for Teenagers

Introduction

Exams are right around the corner and once again the material is hardly manageable, not to mention that the motivation to study is nonexistent. Time and again the same pressure in the same situation!

You cannot teach a person anything. You can only help them to discover it in themselves.

Galileo Galilei

Learning counseling makes sense if you have any of the following questions:

  • I want to reach my goals faster, how can I make this happen?
  • The subject matter is getting to be too much for me. What can I do?
  • What is the point of studying?
  • How do I cope with exams without a lot of stress?
  • I studied so much, why are my grades still not very good?
  • I tend to procrastinate when it comes to studying. Are there any tricks to get over this?
  • How can I get over my own self-doubt?
  • While studying, I’m constantly thinking about other things. How do I stay concentrated?

We help you to move forward.

You bring the problems and we bring the necessary tools to help you solve them. You will experience how setting concrete goals will give you the motivation that helps to push you from where you are right now to where you want to be. You will learn everything about how to organize your own learning, as you are given tailored studying strategies and you learn how you can develop your own handy solutions. At the same time, we do not simply leave you with a list of suggestions; instead we are there to support you when it comes to pursuing these new learning strategies.

You learn how to set the right course.

It is worth it to take a break, as clearing your mind allows you to see things in a different light. If you have the right attitude, you will be able to reach your goals. Making this decision requires courage and with it comes responsibility.

Different perspectives can have a positive effect.

Sometimes your internal voice will whisper things such as, “That will never work, you have never held a good presentation” or “You cannot remember so many vocabulary words.” During the learning counseling sessions, you will learn specifically how to deal with this inner voice. Once you begin implementing these strategies, the voice will change positively over time.

Motivation is a burst of energy.

Finally, what gets us moving? Neurologists confirm that interest and motivation give us energy to tackle challenges. During the learning counseling we will answer the question: what are the driving forces behind finding motivation for studying?
Practicing
We learn which methods help us to memorize information, how to efficiently summarize a text, or what a clear chronological plan looks like by working hands-on with concrete examples. As with every first step, reflection on one’s own behavior and practicing new strategies takes some time and support. The learning counseling sessions provide this framework for the individual, as focusing on the target is the key to success.

Gymnasium exam coaching Zurich

GYMNASIUM EXAM COACHING ZURICH

Gymnasium exam coaching Zurich

Introduction

Together, we specifically learn what will be tested in the entrance exam. Depending on the existing knowledge we structure and divide the subject matter into subtasks. Only in the end the subtasks will be put together again by solving exams of previous years.

If the learning technique doesn’t match with the test content or the type of examination, the necessary knowledge will not be gained despite spending a lot of time studying.

Therefore we analyze the learning technique in our coaching as well. If needed, the appropriate learning technique will be taught and trained. Consequently we build up the knowledge step-by-step to be ready for the exam. Thanks to our longtime experience we know where to set priorities.

However, what really matters is the performance in the exam and the achieved results in order to be admitted to the gymnasium. Using mental techniques and self-regulation techniques against blocking thoughts have proven to be successful.

  • structured process of building up knowledge
  • developing suitable learning techniques
  • no longer putting off things
  • individual learning schedule – clear control and guidance
  • blackout prevention or blackout intervention
  • mental training against exam anxiety in exam situations
  • consultancy for parents

Individual gymnasium exam preparation

When does an individual exam preparation make sense?

Clarify requirements. Is the gymnasium the right option for me?

  • We look closely and inquire whether the conditions are being met and if the gymnasium is the right way for you to go

Customized preparation after summer break

  • After an individual evaluation we will build up the exam material according to your customized learning schedule
  • Missing knowledge gaps from elementary school (Primarschule and Sekundarschule) will be closed
  • We will follow your learning pace keeping your objectives for the entry exam in mind
  • Opposed to group classes we will be able put the focus on math or German if needed

Selective guidance

  • Are you attending a private group class or a preparation course at your school? Do you feel insecure and not all your questions have been answered?
We will have a close look at everything.

Evaluation of knowledge (after first term/end of term of 5th grade elementary school)

  • Do you want to know exactly where you stand and then decide which way you want to go to prepare for your entry exam? We will help you and discuss your options.

Consultancy for parents and external help

  • Do you spend a lot of time studying with your daughter or your son? Do you often have endless discussions? An external exam preparation course helps to ease the tension.

Pressure of time

  • You’ve started to study for the exam at home. However, you would appreciate to get some external support, but the group classes have already begun or are full. We will find a suitable timeframe for you.

You keep studying and studying…

  • … but you don’t reach the sufficient score when doing some mock exams. Is it the content of the questions, is it your learning technique or do you feel anxious and under pressure? All these things can affect your studying.

How to get ready for the gymnasium exam

In a customized exam preparation course topics in math or German will be repeated and the most important terms will be learned. The structures of exam papers will be screened, explained and trained.

Long term gymnasium (secondary school)

Math
Similar repetitive basic math tasks will be tested in the next exam in a different form. We will crack the structure of pure numerical calculations, simple and complex proportions, equations for divisions, time and distance, volume (e.g. pipes and drain), as well as combinatorial problems.

Geometry
According to our experience the priorities to teach geometry at elementary school level vary from school to school. You will learn how to use the basic terms in geometry in exam questions.

German
Based on the existing knowledge we will consolidate the required grammar topics, expand your vocabulary, and write essays on a regular basis.
During the essay training you will learn what to pay particular attention to when choosing a topic. You can interpret and implement the assignment. When being familiar with the structure and the composition of an essay your text will take shape. Thus you will be able to revise the draft according to exam relevant evaluation criteria.
